Jazz Blog Special: Hazel Scott, 'Relaxed Piano Moods'

Hazel Scott's renditions of "Like Someone in Love," "Peace of Mind" and "Lament" perfectly fit the name of a collection called "Relaxed Piano Moods." They're beautiful. But I'd hardly call her versions of "The Jeep is Jumpin'," "A Foggy Day" and Mountain Greenery" relaxed. Elegant, yes. Bluesy, certainly. Inventive, yep.

Scott made her piano shimmy when she played uptempo tunes. Her companions, bassist Charles Mingus and drummer Max Roach obviously knew how to shake.

She doesn't sing on the album, but she also had a lovely voice. Here's a YouTube clip of Scott singing and playing her piano on a version of "A Foggy Day" with Mingus on bass and Rudy Nichols on drums.
